The projet

The PNG LNG EPC5A infrastructure carries natural gas from the processing plant in central Papua New Guinea to the Gulf of Papua, where a subsea pipeline conveys the gas to a liquefaction plant in Port Moresby, the capital city.

As part of the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract, Spiecapag installed 451 kilometres of onshore pipelines and related equipment.

The project also involved engineering, procurement, logistics, construction and pre-commissioning tests.

The contract included the installation of 130 km of fibre optic cable and a high voltage electric cable, as well as the construction of 18 km of new roads and upgrades to 206 km of existing roads.

The challenge

The project was carried out in the jungle, crossing mountainous terrain, marshlands, peaks, karstic zones, volcanic rock and steep slopes, representing a considerable challenge in very difficult conditions. Along the route, it rains up to 9 metres of water annually, which led Spiecapag to build 350 km of permanent roads and bridges in order to handle the project logistics, construction and maintenance.

Over and above the technical challenge, the project had to find a balance between economic growth, social development and protection of the local environment, today and for future generations.
