Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan - South Caucasus Pipeline

⧭ Georgia

Client: BP (consortium leader)

The projet

The project involved building two parallel pipelines, two pump stations along the route in Georgia and a pump station in Azerbaijan.

  • The BTC (Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan), a 250 km pipeline 46” in diameter carrying oil
  • The SCP (South Caucasus Pipeline), a 250 km pipeline 42” in diameter carrying gas

The pipelines are buried along their entire length, even in the high mountainous region of the South Caucasus. Built in the same footprint, the two pipelines were studied and designed to minimise the environmental and social impact on the areas crossed.

The projects were carried out in very challenging, isolated environments, which are hit by severe winter weather conditions.
Overall, the project involved building over 1,700 km of pipeline spanning three countries, from Azerbaijan to Turkey, via Georgia. It is the second longest oil pipeline in the world.

Each stretch involved building 248 km of pipeline and supporting infrastructure.
